This interview offers an inside look at the motivations, experiences, and reflections of Pascale and the CORIA team as part of the ENCODING Doctoral Network. From the project’s early challenges to the day-to-day work with doctoral candidates, Pascale shares a candid perspective on what it means to lead research within a Marie Skłodowska-Curie framework. What motivated you to participate in this Marie Curie project?
Working with a team of European researchers who are well recognised in their field on a very important subject.
What was the biggest challenge when getting the project started?
The administrative part.
Was it easy to find and select our DCs?
Our project manager, Patricia, managed the dispatching of the offers and organisation of the interviews very well. Although there were many candidates, finding the right person for each position was relatively easy.
Any memorable or funny moments with the DCs you would like to share?
Funny moments: The temperature in northern France was challenging for the two Neapolitan DCs who came to CORIA. An additional heater had to be brought into their office.
If you could go back, would you do anything differently in the selection or mentorship of the DCs?
No.
What has surprised you the most about how the project has evolved so far?
The team building and the communication between the DCs.
What would you improve in the management or coordination if you could do it again?
Nothing.
Any lessons learned you’d like to share with other PIs or future projects?
Complete the administrative tasks as they arise and take advantage of the research opportunities offered by the funding.
What do you hope to see in the next phase of the project?
Publications, effective transfer of results and tools developed in the industry, and preparation of DCs for their next professional adventure.

What is your “secret ritual” to stay motivated during long projects?
None is needed. Working on interesting projects, such as Encoding with nice people, is enough to keep me going. Maybe also a cup of strong coffee every morning.
